A Conversation on Sustainable Design
As designers and problem-solvers we are research-driven creatures constantly in search of answers. Some solutions are found in the purity of a mathematical equation or on the reliance of past and proven methods. But some questions are not easily answered by a straight-forward formula and are instead arrived at over time through the art of conversation. About two years ago we began having serious and meaningful conversations at Bartlett & West on the topic of sustainability: what is it, what impact does it have for our business and our profession, and what does it mean to us as individuals and as responsible members of our communities? Those conversations continue today. I hope that many of you who read this blog will spread the word and join our conversation.

Desktop vs. Server: Which provides the greater ROI?
Welcome to the GIS & IM Technologies blog. I will try to keep this brief so as to elicit responses from the community.
The first question at hand is directly related to the current economic situation and how we as GIS & IM professionals justify implementing new technologies, specifically if we are moving from a stand-alone environment to an enterprise or server-based environment. I don’t believe that there is a one-size fits all scenarios when we start looking at what your return on investment (ROI) might be when deciding on one environment over the other.
