SW Wanamaker Road Corridor
Topeka & Shawnee County, Kansas

This series of improvements along the Wanamaker corridor transformed the roadway from a two-lane country road to a multi-lane, high-volume urban arterial with multi-lane roundabouts. The improvements serve increasing demand as development continues on the southern edge of the city, enhancing traffic flow and improving safety for area motorists and pedestrians alike.

Tanner-Ellis-Intersection

Tanner Bridge and Ellis Boulevard Intersection Improvements
Jefferson City, Missouri

As part of an LPA project, Bartlett & West designed a roundabout for the City of Jefferson to upgrade the four-way stop intersection of Tanner Bridge Road and Ellis Boulevard. The original intersection was a four-way stop controlled intersection with an extreme skew. The innovative design included a bypass lane for a right turn movement, outside truck aprons, and a unique center island shape. Bartlett & West developed multiple alternatives to handle the difficult geometry and steep grades to achieve the best solution for the location. The original four-way stop intersection did not include pedestrian facilities. The new sidewalks were designed to meet ADA requirements and accommodate the difficult geometry of the intersection.

Shawnee County, Kansas

Shawnee County received Recovery Funds for use in reconstructing NW 46th Street. The application emphasized accident history and severity, system preservation, potential adjacent economic development and job creation. The project was selected for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. This was the largest of 77 local projects. The improvements replaced a rural ditch section with curb & gutter and storm sewers. There were also multi-lane roundabouts constructed at NW 46th Street & Oakley and NW 46th Street & Fielding.

US 59 Highway Re-design and Construction
Kansas Department of Transportation
Douglas County, Kansas

The original US 59 Highway was a rolling, two-lane highway with numerous access points and high traffic volumes. Inadequate sight distance has been prevalent at many of the intersections and driveways. This contributed to it being noted as one of the worst roadways in Kansas for accidents and fatalities. The new highway project includes 11.5 miles of new, four-lane freeway designed to interstate standards, three, new grade-separated interchanges and 8.3 miles of new frontage/access roads. The project is currently under design and construction and is expected to be complete in 2011.

6th-St-Baldwin-City

6th Street, Orange to Indiana Street Improvements
Baldwin City, Kansas

The project involved the south leg of the major north/south artery of Baldwin City. Baldwin City and Douglas County jointly funded the improvements to this previously rural roadway section. The new roadway section is nine-inch thick asphalt and 31-feet wide with sidewalks on at least one side for the entire stretch. The corridor generally slopes from west to east, with homes on the west side of 6th Street and a creek on the east side. Aesthetically pleasing modular block retaining walls were used to transform undesirably steep yards into reasonably sloped and mowable yards. The City now has a safer street and a storm sewer system that can convey a 25-year storm event and residents no longer need to walk on the busy narrow road, enjoying their new sidewalks.

An innovative project coordination plan helped reduce the design timeframe by 13 months to meet the City’s aggressive schedule. A distinctive design economically solved multiple project challenges with a combination pedestrian underpass/stormwater overflow structure that increased drainage capacity while allowing for pedestrian access.
