Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation – Mayetta, Kansas
Our relationship with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation has provided Bartlett & West the opportunity to work on many projects over the years and as a result have helped improve infrastructure throughout the Reservation. Our design services include work on a variety of projects from road reconstruction to wastewater treatment to the development of new subdivisions.

Because of the diverse design work provided to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation it was a natural fit to team again when Harrah’s Casino, located on the Reservation, decided to expand its establishment. Our services provided for a new 125,000-gpd mechanical wastewater treatment plant, a 200,000-gallon elevated water tower, and all site work and storm water improvements including detention.

Two of the more unique projects Bartlett & West has worked on include the design of a pedestrian and recreational trail and construction of a new health clinic on the Reservation. Our assistance with applying for funding helped secure a Kansas Department of Transportation grant for the one and three quarter miles of trail. As for the new health clinic, Bartlett & West provided the civil and structural design for the clinic where the project included an onsite wastewater treatment system, storm sewer collection, storm water detention, domestic water, fire protection water line, all site work, a helipad for emergency air service, and all landscaping for the site.

North Dakota Transportation Bus Storage Facilities – North Dakota Department of Transportation
The North Dakota Department of Transportation recently embarked on a new journey. Tasked with administering Federal Highway Administration Transit Funds, the NDDOT began the process of selecting its team members to design four separate buildings in four separate communities. The buildings are being used for storage of buses used by the elderly and other incapable of traveling to the larger community of Bismarck on their own. They will ultimately be owned by the regional transit authority, a second member of the project team.

Bartlett & West was selected as the final team member to complete site layout, grading design, legal surveying, utility design, building design and layout, contract administration, construction observation, and construction staking. Working as a team, the design was developed, reviewed, modified, and reviewed again until the all were satisfied we had an economical building to construct and operate for years to come.

Finney County Museum Renovations & Master Planning – Finney County, Kansas
The Finney County Museum sits within Finnup Park and by the Garden City Zoo in the Southwest region of Garden City, Kansas. Bartlett & West used various innovative ideas to provide a wonderfully designed outdoor plaza which included a new additional multi-purpose building, various pathways, and numerous types of beautiful landscape plantings. As expected with a park facility, this site is heavily vegetated with large existing trees. One particular tree of note on the museum grounds is a state champion Lace Bark Elm that sits almost perfectly in the center of the site. All items were designed with a careful eye to detail in order to let the existing museum and additional park facility coexist, yet still let visitors have a cheerful place to gather while visiting the Museum.

Tasks performed by Bartlett & West included site visitation, schematic design and compiling a final overall master plan. All facets of the project were worked in conjunction with the architects and were produced in a fast and efficient manner in order to meet deadlines set forth by the members of Finney County Museum staff.

College Hill Redevelopment – Topeka, Kansas
Washburn University is enjoying something of a renaissance these days. Increasing enrollment and successful athletic teams have sparked a surge of activities that has resulted in new on-campus housing, educational buildings, and athletic/recreational facilities. Near this campus site was a blighted area of vacant buildings and boarded-up storefronts that at one time functioned as a small retail neighborhood for local students. Thanks to the foresight of Washburn-Lane Parkway Renovations, LLC, this neighborhood is now being transformed into a stellar example of New Urbanist architecture and Traditional Neighborhood design. The development team, the City of Topeka, Washburn University, the College Hill Neighborhood Association, and Bartlett & West worked together to bring this exciting new mixed-use redevelopment project to the community.

When the College Hill Redevelopment project is finished the local community will benefit from this mixed-use development which will feature the convenience of urban living in the comfort and beauty of a historic neighborhood. The project comprises 216 residential units, approximately 24,000 square feet of retail space, and a 6,500 square foot clubhouse on nine acres within the 100-year-old College Hill neighborhood adjacent to Washburn University.

Bartlett & West is excited to be part of such an historic development project where our engineering design work included traditional infrastructure improvements such as street paving, parking, sanitary, storm water, and water distribution in addition to many unique elements including decorative and patterned concrete paving, a large segmental retaining wall that was designed in concert with the site and building architecture, relocation of existing ornamental street lighting and more.

American Family Insurance – St. Joseph, Missouri
A major building project at the American Family Insurance Company office complex in St. Joseph, Missouri added a new four story office building to the existing building complex along with the associated site improvements. The project included a one and three-quarter mile sanitary sewer main extension to serve the building complex and surrounding properties in the drainage basin and improvements to Mitchell Avenue which provides the main access for the American Family complex and their neighbors across the street, Missouri Western State University.

Bartlett & West provided engineering design and construction plans for the site improvements on the project, including the sanitary sewer main extension, Mitchell Avenue improvements, site grading, paving and storm drainage. In addition, Bartlett & West provided construction layout for the project and construction observation services for the sanitary sewer main extension.

Kaw River State Park - Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks
Bartlett & West worked with members of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to provide a backbone for development of State Park 24 while establishing a working master plan document that is flexible enough to change and grow as the park develops. Specific tasks of this project required seeking potential user group input as well as letting the desired master plan become integrated with the current trails that exist near MacLennan Park today.

The final product included current and future planning recommendations for numerous elements to be available within the State Park 24 area. These elements include new trail head connections, future boat access to the Kansas River along with environmental education and kid’s fishing ponds to name just a few. The overall result is a well planned park for both KDWP staff members and the numerous park users from all of the general public.

Clarion Lakes Subdivision - Topeka, Kansas
Living within a native landscape of ponds, rolling streets, and original outdoor sculptures is what has drawn residents to the Clarion Lakes subdivision constructed in southwest Shawnee County in Topeka, Kansas. Bartlett & West was responsible for design, construction staking and contract administration of this 128 lot subdivision which includes two retention basins and approximately 5,000 linear feet of storm sewer. In an attempt to minimize disturbance to the site, the lot configuration was designed to utilize the existing drainage channels as much as possible.

The project creates a unique upscale housing opportunity including clubhouse, walking trails, picnic area, large estate lots and a full maintenance villa section. The Clarion Lakes neighborhood is packed with magnificent landscaping including split roadways, water features, brick pavement and other aesthetic features.

The sanitary sewer of this subdivision consists of approximately 12,000 linear feet with manholes ranging from five to 28 feet in depth. As part of this project, a triplex pump station will be constructed with two miles of force main handling the complete buildout of this phase and future phases of the subdivision.
